The curtain came down on not only the indoor season, but also the U13/U15/U17 age groups, at the NECAA Indoor Pentathlon at Gateshead on Sunday. Our 7 Team Blyth multi-eventers were in fine form – here is what they achieved. U15 Boys – Harry Ross had a breakthrough competition setting impressive new standards. A clear highlight was a huge high jump PB of 1.40m, with PB’s also in the 60m, Hurdles & Shot Put, for an overall points PB of 1557pts for 4th place. U15 Girls – India Gorvett produced a fantastically consistent performance. She led the field after the 60m hurdles, and produced strong performances in the shot put and long jump to help build a strong points total. Recent high jump troubles were negotiated well to keep her in the medal hunt, and she finished with a 60m PB to take a brilliant bronze medal with 2255pts. U17 Girls – A massive field of 24 athletes included 4 from Team Blyth. Charlotte Hartley recovered from a stuttery hurdles to record her 2nd best ever high jump. This was followed by a solid shot put, and a brilliant last round long jump. She finished with a new 60m PB, breaking 9 seconds for the first time. An Overall Points score of 2027pts was a fine achievement. Kimi Ng made an incredible start to the day, setting PB’s in her first 3 events (Hurdles 10.73, High Jump 1.31m, Shot 6.32m). In the long jump, she saved her best until last before storming out of the blocks to finish with a strong 60m. Her overall points total of 2352pts was a massive PB and increase of over 350 on last year. Also scoring 2352pts for equal 9th place was Fearne Bell. She started with a hurdles PB of 10.31sm, before a strong high jump of 1.34m. The shot put was a little below her best but she demonstrated a brilliant hitch-kick in the long jump to set a PB 4.23m. She added 400 to her points total from last year. Safia Diallo had a day to remember. A solid hurdles was followed by a massive step-up in the high jump, as she cleared 1.43m. in the long jump and shot put she was close to her PB’s, before smashing her 60m with a massive PB of 8.61s. Her points total of 2473pts was a 900pt increase on her pts best from this comp. U20 Women – Senna Gorvett concluded her indoor season in perfect style, becoming NECAA Indoor Pentathlon champion once again. She led from the front in the hurdles, before pulling out an excellent final throw in the shot put. Consistency was the key in the long jump, as Senna was locked in an intense battle with Emma from Middlesbrough for the 2nd year in a row. The high jump was the key event. A pressure 3rd time clearance at 1.55m kept Senna in the hunt, and she went on to clear 1.61m to go into the 60m with a 1pt lead. Senna was laser focused, and stormed to victory with a strong run, to set a new pts PB of 3465pts.

It was a fiercely contested event, with Senna Exchanging the lead with her 2 closest competitors throughout the day. Senna started with a massive hurdles PB (9.33s), followed by a 1.60m high jump - a near perfect start to the day - however the opposition were also firing on all cylinders. A below par shot put created some tension and frustration, but that was eased with a strong opening jump in the long jump, followed by an excellent 5.24m in the last round. Senna went into the 800m in 2nd place, but she took the race by the scruff of the next and led from front to take the race win in a huge PB of 2:26.83s to secure her first national title with an overall points PB of 3397pts, the best by a North East athlete this decade. Two of our talented young athletes were invited to compete at the UKA/EA Winter Long Throws Championships at the weekend in Loughborough, the home of elite athletics the UK.
Fearne Bell and Ben Compton were both competing in the new u16 age groups in the Hammer Throw, and they both did fantastically to earn their places on the podium! Fearne Bell - 41.94m SB - 2nd place u16G 🥈 Ben Compton - 51.92m - 3rd place u16b 🥉 Both athletes set very high standards for themselves, and will work hard to develop further as we head towards the summer season! 💚🤍💚 |
