Athlete Pathways

Here at Blyth Running Club we very much believe in an athlete-centred approach. The needs of the athlete are all important to us, and our aim is to develop a team spirit and supporting club structure that will allow young people to thrive and achieve their goals. As such, we offer several different athlete pathways.

Foundation/Fundamental Group based at Bede Academy, Blyth For young people aged 7-12 and older, this is a group for those new to athletics who want to learn, have fun and work hard. It is important to develop all-round skills in the initial stage of athletics development, and this includes running, jumping and throwing. Our programme is based around the Athletics 365 model, and allows for progression into our other groups, whilst being fun and inclusive. We encourage young athletes to participate in events such as the NOTAN Grand Prix, Sportshall, as well as XC and road races. We welcome young athletes with additional needs. To enquire about joining this group, please email juniors@blythrunningclub.org.uk
Foundation Group based at Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay - For younger athletes aged 7-9. This group is based at the athletics track at Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay. In these sessions we will give young athletes the fundamental skills they need to develop as resilient young athletes. Session will be fun and engaging, providing a mixture of running, jumping and throwing. Skills developed at these sessions will help our young athletes progress on the pathway to more focused training and competition. Our coaches are all fully licenced with UK Athletics and have appropriate DBS clearances.Session take place every Monday 1715-1815 at Churchill Playing Fields Whitley Bay. Numbers are strictly limited to ensure our strict athlete:coach ratios are maintained. £1 charge for session . To enquire about joining this group, please email d-bradley-njai@hotmail.co.uk
Endurance
This pathway is focused around preparation for competition in Cross-country, road and track middle distance races. In recent years this group has delivered athletes that have achieved medal success at national level. Please note that this pathway is for athletes with a desire to work hard and compete, its not a group for those that just wish to develop general fitness. Suitable for athletes in school year 5+.  To enquire about joining this group, please email juniors@blythrunningclub.org.uk

Combined Events
For young athletes with an interest in track and field, we encourage engagement in combined / multi-events. This basically means give everything a try! Jess Ennis-Hill is a prime example of a fantastic combined events role-model. For athletes in school years 5+, we offer a broad range of training which covers sprints, hurdles, endurance, jumps and throws with the aim of participating in pentathlons, and eventually heptathlons and decathlons. This group is one of the leading groups of its type in the North of England, and contains 2 current English National Champions. We have a development group and an advanced group.  To enquire about joining this group, please email d-bradley-njai@hotmail.co.uk

Sprints/Hurdles
Our sprint/hurdles group forms part of our combined events groups, and even for those that wish to specialise, we always encourage trying multi-events at a young age. This group is a competition based group, and it is expected that all athletes who train with the group will compete at local, regional and national championships. We do of course ensure that athletes are ready prior to competing. Our group comprises boys and girls aged 10 to 18.  To enquire about joining this group, please email d-bradley-njai@hotmail.co.uk

Jumps
Again, we incorporate jumps as part of our combined events programme. Our well-regarded high jump academy has helped develop many fantastic high jumpers who continue to have success at a high level. We offer horizontal jumps training (long & triple), and can offer pole vault coaching through an external coach (ask for details). We are one of the leading clubs in the North East for jumps at present, and as with our other groups, this is competition based group.  To enquire about joining this group, please email d-bradley-njai@hotmail.co.uk

Throws
Throws training is again linked in with our combined events group, but we offer throwing on a wide basis within the club. Furthermore, we work with coaches from other clubs to ensure that we can deliver a wide range of high-quality throws coaching.  To enquire about joining this group, please email d-bradley-njai@hotmail.co.uk

Volunteering
We encourage young people to become fully engaged in their sport. There are a variety of pathways into coaching, officiating and other roles. There is funding available to fully cover the cost of certain course, details available upon request
